🧭 Project overview

AIM combined an IAI precision robot, the AIVE 2.1 flexible feeder, and the RoboEYE dual-camera vision system to build an automatic pick, inspect, and reel-taping system for 0.3 mm ultra-small SMD parts.

On a production line for micro parts such as lead frames and chip components, it fully automated a precision assembly process that had been done by hand — achieving a 70% efficiency gain and a defect rate under 0.001%.

⚙️ Customer requirements

  • Automatically align and insert ultra-small SMD parts of 0.3 mm or less.
  • A flexible feeding system that handles 20+ part shapes.
  • Quality inspection of reel-taping results and data logging without human intervention.

To meet these, AIM provided an integrated platform of flexible feeder + dual vision + precision robot.


🧠 Key technology

🎥 RoboEYE dual-camera vision

  • Cam1 (top): recognizes part position, orientation, and front-face shape.
  • Cam2 (bottom): corrects rotation error of 0.03 mm or less after pickup.
  • Fusing both cameras’ calibration data achieves ±0.05 mm insertion accuracy.

  • A top vibration basket delivers uniform vibration even for tiny parts.
  • Frequency/amplitude control (1 Hz / 0.1 mm steps) for delicate feeding.
  • Minimized flipping/overlap for stable long-run feeding.

  • RoboEYE vision coordinates linked in real time to IAI robot X, Y, R data.
  • Fully automated from pickup to automatic insertion into reel-taping slots.
  • Auto-calibration cuts setup time (typically under 5 minutes).
